IKC Het Talent in Osdorp is building itself a new school building to provide its pupils and staff a healthy and stimulating learning environment. The design by Paul de Ruiter Architects is for a sustainable building that incorporates smart energy features, provides extra recreational space and meets all the requirements for Frisse Scholen (“Fresh Air in Schools”) class B certification, and in so doing supports the school’s objectives.

More space for recreational activity

The building consists of three storeys, of which the upper floors project outwards, and uniformly, on either side above a compact ground floor. This frees up more space outside the building for recreational activity. The overhangs also add to the building’s distinctiveness, and create sheltered areas outside for the kids to play in when it rains. The three floors are connected by a central staircase. On the ground floor are the nursery school, parents’ room, playroom, teachers' lounge, janitor’s room and ancillary spaces. The independent-learning room and staff rooms are located on the south side, while the classrooms hug the east, west and north perimeters of the upper floors.

Compact and symmetrical

The building’s overall form is compact and symmetrical, thus complementing that of the adjacent buildings, namely Garage Notweg and the building formerly occupied by the Lucas School. The blank sections of the façade are of brick, while floor-to-ceiling glass walls and window blinds are used to lend the open sections a vertical profile. These blinds keep out direct sunlight while letting in abundant natural light and allowing pupils and teachers to enjoy the view of the world outside.

The outcome of incorporating this energy-efficient climate control system, our employment of low-maintenance building materials and adoption of sustainable methods is a sustainable building equipped for a more environmentally aware future

Healthy learning environment

IKC Het Talent has been designed to meet all the requirements for Frisse Scholen (“Fresh Air in Schools”) class B certification, so as to further support the health and performance of everyone in the building. Large sections of the façade can be opened, which not only helps to erase the division between indoors and outdoors, but also allows for as much natural ventilation as the seasons permit. In addition, the building is equipped with a smart and highly energy-efficient ventilation system that regulates the supply of fresh air in the classrooms.

The outcome of incorporating this climate control system, and of our employment of low-maintenance building materials and adoption of sustainable methods is a sustainable building equipped for a more environmentally aware future.
