Hotel Houthavens

Back to overview

Paul de Ruiter Architects designed a concept for a hotel at the head of Island 3 in Amsterdam's Houthavens. An urban icon—with its hidden treasures and expansive, green jetty square with an outdoor pool—connects the IJ River to Houthaven, Spaarndammerbuurt, and the city. A sustainably built apartment hotel in contemporary Amsterdam School architecture.

Focus on the local area

Hotel Houthavens primarily focuses on Amsterdam's neighborhoods outside the city center, such as the Spaarndammerbuurt. This allows hotel guests to easily discover the charms of the neighborhood and its residents. Local businesses become partners with Hotel Houthavens because the hotel does not have any food and beverage facilities, thus contributing to the economic development of the Spaarndammerbuurt. The hotel's values—comfort, local, accessible, and personalized—are reflected in the high-quality finishes of the apartments and the 24-hour concierge service. With a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, bedroom, and living room in each apartment, guests can also stay at the hotel for longer periods.

Green Facilities

Hotel Houthavens offers a wide variety of facilities where visitors and residents can meet. For example, hotel guests and local residents can enjoy the sheltered courtyard with a stage, the rooftop garden with urban farming, and the jetty square with an outdoor pool in the IJ River. On summer weekends, classical acoustic concerts and film nights are held in the courtyard. On the roof terrace, guests can enjoy a picnic basket.

Refined Detailing

The hotel's exterior opens up along both long facades, revealing its secrets. The exterior is a robust brickwork block with refined detailing, while the interior facades are finished with glazed gold ceramic tiles. The interior is a green garden with an amphitheater at its heart, overlooking the IJ River. The courtyard is accessible to the public from the IJ Square. The exterior facades are constructed of various shades of red brick with light gray joints.

Vibrant appearance

The exterior facades are divided into the plinth, the middle section, and the crown. Hotel Houthavens has numerous front doors because the guests are temporary residents; the spacious ground-floor apartments each have their own front door. Above the open and accessible plinth, the middle section of the building creates a solid appearance through the interplay of open and closed surfaces. The building ends with a vertically articulated crown, behind which are "superlofts": spectacular, spacious, double-height rooms with expansive views of the city and water.
