Paul de Ruiter Architects designed a concept for a hotel at the head of Island 3 in Amsterdam's Houthavens. An urban icon that - with its hidden treasures and vast, green jetty square with an outdoor swimming pool - establishes a connection from the IJ to Houthaven, Spaarndammerbuurt, and the city. A sustainably built apartment hotel in contemporary Amsterdam school architecture.
Focus on local
Hotel Houthavens focuses primarily on Amsterdam's neighborhoods outside the city center, such as the Spaarndammerbuurt. Hotel guests can thus get acquainted with the charms of the neighborhood and its residents in an accessible way. Local entrepreneurs become partners of Hotel Houthavens because the Hotel has no catering facilities, thus contributing to the economic development of the Spaarndammerbuurt. The values of the Hotel - comfort, local, access, and personal - are reflected in the high-quality finish of the apartments and 24-hour concierge service. With a full kitchen, washing machine, bedroom, and living room in each apartment, guests can also stay at the Hotel for longer periods of time.
Green facilities
Hotel Houthavens offers a wide variety of facilities where visitors and residents can meet. For example, hotel guests and local residents can use the sheltered courtyard garden with a stage, the roof with urban farming, and the jetty square with an outdoor pool in the IJ. On summer weekends, classical acoustic concerts and movie nights take place in the courtyard garden. On the roof terrace, there is the possibility to eat with a picnic basket in the roof garden.
Refined detailing
The Hotel's exterior opens up on both long facades and reveals its secret. From the outside, it is a sturdy masonry block with refined detailing, and the facades are, finished with glazed, gold-colored ceramic tiles. The interior space is a green garden with an amphitheater at its heart overlooking the IJ. From the IJ square, the inner garden is accessible to the public. The exterior facades are materialized in different shades of red brick with a light gray joint
Vibrant look
The exterior facades are divided into the plinth, the middle section, and the crown. Hotel Houthavens has many front doors because the guests are temporary residents, the spacious apartments on the first floor each have their own front door. Above the open and accessible plinth, the middle section of the building gives a solid appearance through the interaction between open and closed surfaces. The end of the building is a vertically articulated crown behind which sit "superlofts": spectacular spacious double-height rooms with sweeping views of the city and water.
Circular and energy-generating
As an energy-producing building, Hotel Houthavens is the figurehead of the sustainable Houthaven district. The building is fully circular in its use of materials and energy-generating. As a result, the Hotel itself is an ecosystem that continuously exchanges products and services with its surroundings while not negatively impacting the environment. Similarly, the covered roof terrace with a greenhouse where CO2 is extracted from the air is unique of its kind. The operation of the Hotel is extremely sustainable, with the supply of goods and guests by electric boat and the use of sustainable products. The use of materials is also part of the concept with the use of local products and sustainable and healthy materials. Through home automation, daylighting, and renewable energy, natural energy is used as intelligently as possible.
