Günes Özdemir
Günes finished her architecture studies at the Istanbul Bilgi University, However, her interest soon expanded to a broader approach to the built environment, encompassing not only architecture but also urban planning and ecology. This was reflected in her graduation project, where she integrated a public library with sustainable strategies such as bioswales.
After the devastating earthquake in Turkey, Günes visited her hometown of Adıyaman. There, her awareness of the impact of architecture deepened—not only did she witness the physical destruction, but she also saw the consequences for the community and the negative effects on human health caused by the dust from collapsed buildings. This experience reinforced her belief that architecture goes beyond aesthetics—it carries a responsibility to contribute to a resilient, healthy, and sustainable living environment.
With a strong interest in urban development and sustainability, Günes aims to further expand her knowledge during this internship.
‘Sustainability is a popular term that is frequently used today, but is often lacking in practice. However, at Paul De Ruiter Architects, I can feel sustainability not just as a concept, but as a principle that is put into practice at every stage. The new techniques and sustainable design approaches I have learned here have enhanced my architectural practice and made me a more conscious designer.’
