Yesterday, construction company J.P. van Eesteren, along with project developer White House Development and construction partners, celebrated the topping out of the Mama Shelter Hotel in Amsterdam. The 30-meter-tall hotel tower has 150 rooms. Opening is scheduled for 2027.

"Celebrating the highest point is a beautiful building tradition," says Michel Hoogendoorn, Director of Project Realization at J.P. van Eesteren. "We enjoy doing this together with our colleagues and subcontractors on the construction site, partly to thank them for all their hard work." The hotel will open its doors on Asterweg in 2027, located in the once rugged Buiksloterham industrial estate in Amsterdam-Noord. Mama Shelter is a French concept. Guests of this first Dutch establishment can expect exuberant, colorful interiors and enjoy a restaurant, bar, terrace, and rooftop bar.

Sustainable and Circular

Equally remarkable is the circular and energy-neutral design by Paul de Ruiter Architects, which aligns with a sustainable future and pays tribute to the building's industrial past, which was built in 1969 as a metalworking factory. This sustainable approach was already evident during the dismantling of the old warehouse, which J.P. van Eesteren, together with TBI sister company Struijk Sloopwerken, tackled in an environmentally responsible and circular manner. Sustainability was also a key focus during construction. For example, the crane base was poured with more sustainable concrete, and donor steel was used for the temporary support structure. Furthermore, the reinforcement and steel structure are largely constructed with low-carbon steel, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

BREEAM Excellent

The facades and roof of the 6,300-square-meter hotel will be equipped with solar panels, making the building self-sufficient. The building will also have a thermal energy storage system. All in all, this results in Hotel Mama Shelter being realised with a BREEAM Excellent certificate.
