On Wednesday, January 21st, de Architect is hosting another evening at Pakhuis de Zwijger, bringing the print edition to life. This time, the theme is "Paris Proof?" and how architects balance regulation, realism, and responsibility. Oscar Vos, Jasper Smits, Martijn van Gameren, Christina Kaiser, Robert Winkel, and Marc Koehler will be speaking.
In 2024, the Earth surpassed the 1.5-degree warming threshold, effectively making the Paris Agreement's goal unattainable. Nevertheless, "Paris-Proof" construction remains a guiding principle for architects and their clients: it offers a concrete framework for minimizing energy consumption and reducing material impact. During this evening, we will discuss what Paris-Proof construction means in practice, based on the latest edition of De Architect. We aim to delve deeper into how the construction sector can reinvent itself in an era where climate neutrality is no longer an ideal, but a necessity.
Floortje Keijzer, industry editor at de Architect, will open the evening by introducing a new toolbox designed to help architects quickly reduce CO2 emissions in their projects. Oscar Vos will then discuss the key sustainable interventions in the IKEC de Zevensprong in Hoorn by KRFT Architecture studio, and Jasper Smits will also present a low-carbon project. His design for Boshuis Blankwater, using biobased materials, resulted in a low-installation building. Robert Winkel (Mei Architects and planners) and Marc Koehler (MKA) will demonstrate how their innovative timber construction concepts for Sawa in Rotterdam and Poppies in Amsterdam, respectively, can contribute to the acceleration and scaling up of timber construction.
The evening will conclude with two Paris-Proof transformation projects: Martijn van Gameren (Paul de Ruiter Architects) will present Coolsingel 93 in Rotterdam, and Christina Kaiser (Braaksma & Roos) will conclude with the key lessons learned from the transformation of the Mining Engineering Building in Delft. Because the evening is co-facilitated by Reynaers, every visitor will receive a magazine to take home!
The event, themed "Paris Proof?", will take place on Wednesday, January 21st at 8:00 PM at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam. Admission is free, but registration is required. Visit the Pakhuis de Zwijger website for more information.
