Carnival Corporation & plc Group, the world's largest cruise line, commissioned us to design a state-of-the-art training campus, the Arison Maritime Center, in Almere DUIN, using a Design & Build contract. Carnival's nautical and technical officers from around the world will meet during training weeks at the CSMART Academy and stay at the adjacent CSMART Hotel. The Arison Maritime Center campus is designed to allow for future expansion with two additional buildings.
The CSMART Academy trains 6,500 nautical and engineering officers annually for approximately one week in maritime safety, sustainability, and operational excellence. This sets the next-level safety standard for the global cruise industry. The world's largest training facility features the most technologically advanced full-size bridge and engine room simulators that simulate normal, as well as less common and even risky situations.
The LEED-Gold CSMART Academy focuses on a healthy learning environment to stimulate peak performance. Plenty of fresh air, a stable indoor climate, sustainable materials, perfect acoustics, and ample daylight create an optimal learning atmosphere. The building has a well-organized structure and a relaxing atmosphere to maximize user-friendliness.
The design of the CSMART Academy consists of a stacking of two worlds within the DUIN landscape in Almere. Four full-size simulators are located underground in the dune landscape, while three transparent floors extend above ground. The central atrium, serving as a social heart, connects the underground and above-ground levels. The transparent plinth houses the entrance, meeting area, and various technical workshops. Conference, learning, and training rooms are located on the first floor, and the top floor is primarily used as a workspace for the Academy's own staff.
The accompanying CSMART Hotel, with underground parking, is connected to the Academy via both an underground corridor and an above-ground dune path. This four-star hotel comprises fourteen floors, two of which serve as storage and parking spaces. The ground floor houses the reception, a large restaurant, and a gym. The eleven transparent hotel floors above offer 176 spacious hotel rooms with fantastic views of the IJmeer or Almere. All facilities are housed close together in the same building for extra comfort and tranquility after an intensive day of training.
The architecture of both buildings exudes transparency thanks to their fully glazed facades. A distinctive feature is the contrast between the dark hues of the Academy and the lightness of the Hotel. Aluminum cassette awnings contribute to the buildings' robust architecture. They prevent overheating while preserving panoramic views and natural light. Awnings with a substantial overhang protect the transparent glass facade from sunlight and overheating, while providing panoramic views of the beautiful surroundings.
The CSMART Academy training campus meets high environmental and sustainability standards to ensure a future-proof learning environment. A strong focus has been placed on the ecological quality of the campus, nestled in the dune landscape. The sustainable climate control system ensures a healthy climate and highly efficient energy consumption. Simulations and 3D BIM were used to achieve an optimal balance between a healthy indoor climate and an energy-efficient building. The project has been awarded a LEED Gold sustainability certificate.
