Ennismore, Chagall B.V., and White House Development B.V. have announced the start of construction on the Netherlands' first Mama Shelter hotel. Paul de Ruiter Architects is transforming a former warehouse in Amsterdam-Noord into this sustainable, energy-neutral hotel that will combine local Amsterdam charm with Mama's distinctive character. The opening is scheduled for 2027.
Amidst the charming neighborhoods and once-rough industrial estates of Amsterdam Noord, lies one of Amsterdam's most vibrant and creative neighborhoods. Mama Shelter Amsterdam will soon embrace the unique DNA of its new neighborhood. Designed by Mama Shelter's design team, guests can expect exuberant interiors, from ceilings adorned with colorful graffiti to unique ornaments throughout the hotel that reference the local area. Echoes of Mama's personality can also be found in the 150 colorful guest rooms, reminding guests not to take life too seriously.
The hotel's design originated with Amsterdam-based architectural firm Paul de Ruiter Architects, which created a circular and energy-neutral design that aligns with a sustainable future and pays tribute to the building's historic industrial past. Construction of the hotel began in September 2024, with the general contractor, J.P. van Eesteren.
Maurits Kortleven of White House Development B.V.: "We are thrilled to be working with such a fantastic team. Mama Shelter Amsterdam, like in many other cities worldwide, will become an icon and hotspot for both the neighborhood and travelers. Architect Paul de Ruiter Architects has done a fantastic job combining heritage and sustainability, and the hotel will ultimately receive the BREEAM Excellent certificate. Together with our asset manager, European Hotel Capital B.V., we are very much looking forward to the grand opening!"
In this urban sanctuary, sharing and conviviality are the beating heart, with Mama Shelter Amsterdam creating a special atmosphere every day in its four F&B venues, including an all-day dining restaurant, a restaurant-bar, a terrace, and a rooftop bar. From homemade food classics to unique cocktail creations, and regular Mama Nights with the best DJs and live music, this Mama will create a social hotspot. For those looking for a more intimate gathering, the hotel offers 80m² of unique meeting and event space, including karaoke rooms and fully equipped breakout containers.
Cedric Gobilliard, Brand Chief Operating Officer of Mama Shelter in Ennismore, said: “Mama thrives where urban excitement meets warm hospitality. Mama Shelter Amsterdam promises to be an immersive experience in this unique corner of Amsterdam, where local charm blends with Mama’s quirky character. We are delighted to partner with White House Development B.V. to bring Mama to the heart of the ‘Venice of the North,’ creating an unforgettable base in the Dutch capital.”
Founded by Serge Trigano and his two sons, Jérémie and Benjamin, Mama Shelter is a place where you can celebrate life to the fullest: the concept is affordable, quirky, popular, daring, and sexy. Mama has created a sanctuary for her guests, where, like a mother to her children, she treats travelers as if they were her own family. The first Mama Shelter in Paris East was followed by hotels in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Los Angeles, Prague, Belgrade, Toulouse, Lille, London, Paris West, Luxembourg, Rome, Lisbon, La Défense in Paris, Rennes, Dijon and Nice. Future locations are currently planned for Dubai, Casablanca, and Cape Town. Mama Shelter Amsterdam joins the existing Ennismore locations in Amsterdam, The Hoxton Amsterdam, and The Hoxton Lloyd.
A stone's throw from the city's historic center, Mama Shelter finds its new home in Amsterdam Noord, just 15 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station and 25 minutes from Schiphol Airport. This quirky part of the city is thriving with avant-garde energy – unassuming shipyards and abandoned industrial estates are now home to some of Noord's finest bars and eateries, while culture vultures can indulge in Amsterdam's modern icon, the Eye Filmmuseum – a futuristic cinema, museum, and film archive. At sunset, the A'DAM Lookout offers unparalleled panoramic views of the famous UNESCO World Heritage canals.
Hotel Mama Shelter Amsterdam will open its doors in 2027, bringing its exuberant, distinctive, and daring concept to the Dutch capital. Read more about the project here.
