The station square is the entrance and calling card of Almere. This area has undergone a major transformation, transforming the vacant former station offices on either side of the main entrance into a multifunctional residential building with a commercial plinth and 67 apartments of varying sizes on the upper floors. The facades of both office buildings were stripped, and two additional floors were added on top of the existing structure. This sustainable intervention not only repurposed the skeleton and foundation, but also increased densification at an existing transport hub.
In the coming years, many new homes will need to be built, especially in cities where space is scarce. Building along or above the railway line offers a promising solution to the housing shortage, promotes urban cohesion, and is sustainable. A key component of the transformation was improving the connection between the bus station, the station square, and the shopping area. The previously cramped "crawl-through-crawl-through" underpasses have been closed and replaced by a spacious, bright passageway. This creates an inviting route where travelers step directly from the train or bus into the vibrant heart of Almere. A pleasant experience enhanced by new shopfronts, awnings, uniform signage, a light artwork, and the redevelopment of the stone-paved station square into a welcoming place to relax with new paving, ample greenery, seating, and meeting areas – designed in consultation with residents. This provides a new impetus for the entire station area. The design pays particular attention to the quality of life for residents. The majority of the homes are designed as maisonettes, with a living and outdoor area oriented towards the sun. While the smooth, rhythmic north facade on the railway side has a tranquil appearance, large windows and balconies on the south side offer views of the square, creating a vibrant atmosphere even outside shopping hours. The new architecture completes the square, contributing to attractive and urban living and enriching the street scene.
