The energy transition and rapid electrification are leading to a significant increase in Enexis’ workload. To meet this demand, more space is needed for the storage and distribution of cables, pipelines, and other materials. The current location in Hoogeveen does not provide sufficient capacity. Therefore, Enexis is developing a new distribution center at the Riegmeer business park: a larger, more efficient, and future-proof building of 54,000 m²—over 2.5 times larger than the current site—with ample space for both indoor and outdoor storage.

A future-proof distribution center

Paul de Ruiter Architects was asked to design this new distribution center. Together with construction company Aan de Stegge Twello and JVZ Ingenieurs, we are creating a building that prioritizes sustainability, ease of use, and logistical efficiency. A striking façade accent marks the main entrance, where the office and business bureau are located on the first floor to encourage collaboration. The façade is simply and sustainably built with recyclable, well-insulating sandwich panels and a wooden exterior ceiling that extends under the overhang. Large windows and shed roofs provide plenty of daylight and a healthy indoor climate, while a rooftop garden and green walls create a pleasant working environment. The interior features natural, biobased materials for a warm and timeless atmosphere.

Logistics and warehouse hall

The logistics have been carefully optimized with separate routes for people and vehicles, clear pathways, safe loading and unloading zones, and maximum warehousing capacity. The warehouse hall is fully accessible via the business bureau and designed with maximum safety and comfort in mind, offering a flexible layout.

Sustainability and energy performance

The building complies with GPR Building (8.0) and EU Taxonomy objectives, using circular materials, low environmental impact solutions, and reusable façade panels. Climate systems include underfloor heating/cooling, active climate ceilings, and an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) or ice buffer system, supported by an Energy Management System to avoid peak loads. Solar carports and rooftop PV panels generate around 460,000 kWh annually. The new distribution center enables Enexis to reliably support the energy supply in Drenthe, Groningen, and Overijssel well into the future.
