Hotel Ruby Emma
Back to overviewIn the Amstelkwartier district, we collaborated with Mulderblauw architects to design the unique Ruby Emma Hotel (formerly QO), a four-star hotel with 288 rooms and one of the first in Europe to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The design stems from the belief that hospitality can be fundamentally more sustainable, with fewer single-use items and closed loops for energy, water, waste, and materials. The intelligent façade opens and closes individually based on the season, weather, and occupancy, saving up to 65% on heating and 90% on cooling.
An energetic place
Authenticity, local tips, and positive energy. That's what Ruby Emma is all about. Positive energy means caring for the world around us. The philosophy of the 288-room Ruby Emma is reflected in its revolutionary design that closes the loop. For example, we solved the energy-saving challenge with the intelligent façade, which reduces energy consumption by 65% (heating) and 90% (cooling), taking into account the seasons, weather conditions, and guest presence. The façade opens and closes for each room based on the hotel's natural heat and cooling.
Lokaal eten produceren
Groene energie vindt ook haar weg naar het restaurant vanuit de grote kas op het dak van het hotel. De kas maakt gebruik van nieuwe technologieën en combineert deze met principes uit de natuur om groenten en fruit te verbouwen en vissen te kweken. Zo passen we een aquaponics systeem toe, een continu circulerend ecosysteem waarin planten en vissen gezamenlijk worden gekweekt. Chemische meststoffen zijn hierbij niet nodig door de aanwezigheid van natuurlijke bacteriën die afval omzetten in voedingsstoffen. Het toepassen van lokale materialen, de lokale productie van eten, de relatie met het Nederlandse klimaat en de sociale verbondenheid met buurt en stad, zorgen ervoor dat het Ruby Emma hotel geen generieke, inwisselbare halte wordt voor internationale reizigers, maar een plek waar lokaal en internationaal elkaar ontmoet.
