Morspoort parking garage

Back to overview

Commissioned by the Municipality of Leiden, we joined forces with construction company Aan de Stegge in a Design & Build project. The result is a temporary, demountable, and sustainable parking garage on Morssingel.

The Morspoort parking garage is located on a site opposite Leiden's western city gate, within walking distance of the station and the city center. The garage offers 390 parking spaces spread over four floors. The building will be operated by the municipality for a period of ten years, pending the development of the area's urban development.

Temporary architecture: sustainable and demountable

By collaborating in a Design & Build format from the design phase onwards, we created a fully demountable, sustainable building of high architectural quality. Despite its temporary nature, sustainable materials were used. Prefabricating major building components shortened construction time and minimized construction waste. The garage can be easily disassembled and reassembled elsewhere after its operational lifespan, potentially in a different configuration.

Public safety and user convenience

We devised a strict separation of pedestrians and cars, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for users. The entrances and stairwells are also separated, ensuring sufficient distance between pedestrians and passing cars. The parking levels are clearly laid out, and for ease of parking, the parking spaces are angled at eighty degrees. The translucent façade cladding provides a clear view of the surroundings from the garage, improving visitor orientation. In consultation with the residents, we opted for a mesh cloth made of sustainable and recyclable plastics on the facades.

Energy-efficient

In the Morspoort parking garage, we achieved significant energy savings through natural ventilation thanks to the air-permeable facade cladding. We also devised a smart lighting plan with dynamic signage and wayfinding, motion detectors, ample natural light, daylight-controlled lighting, and highly energy-efficient light fixtures. Even more energy is saved by the air conditioning system in the porter's lodge, which uses a heat recovery system and a heat pump.
