For the redevelopment of the Schiphol-Oost business park, Schiphol Real Estate developed a master plan containing guidelines for the construction of offices and a new terminal for general aviation. We were commissioned to design a new headquarters for Transavia and Martinair on the corner of the business park. The building had to exude communication and interaction with the surrounding area. Furthermore, the client wanted a building that met stringent sustainability standards. TransPort ultimately became the first building in the Netherlands to receive a LEED Platinum certification, the highest international sustainability certification.
We designed a building form that responds to the built environment. We reflected the building's location on the corner of the business park in the form of a flowing curve in the office. The north side of the building overlooks Schiphol-Oost and the runways, while the south side offers a view of the Amsterdamse Bos.
For the south facade, where the sun heats the building most intensely, we designed louvers on the inside of the curve. These louvers let in plenty of natural daylight while simultaneously blocking heat. This creates a healthy work environment for the staff, where they can work productively. The north facade's positioning allowed us to make it extremely transparent, reducing the energy required to cool the building. We installed over 800 m² of solar panels on the roof and created a natural water buffer in the form of a grass-sedum roof. A graywater system for the sanitary facilities saves the building 40% on water consumption. In the parking garage, we planted trees that grow through the ceiling into the courtyard.
